Finally! Someone seeks accountability from those who have accused ethanol of being the source of many problems! I am glad to see Sen. Grassley using the GMA’s own figures and quotes to beat them at their own game. I have a slide from a powerpoint presentation hanging in my office. In a typical 18-ounce box of Corn Flakes, there is approximately 12.9 ounces (1.44% of a bushel) of corn. At $3 a bushel, that corn cost 4.3 cents. At $6 a bushel, it costs 8.6 cents. Tell me, how does a box of corn flakes increase 21 cents (Fall 2007) and that entire increase be blamed on ethanol? Hmmm.....does it take oil to produce, harvest, ship, and process the corn?

The NSF will be funding a consortium of universities and agencies to create The Center for Bioenergy and Development. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will be the host institution for the center. Other founding universities include South Dakota State University, Kansas State University, North Carolina State University, State University of New York Stony Brook and the University of Hawaii. The Center will focus on refining starch ethanol technologies while also working on cellulosic biofuels.

This article takes a good look at the pipeline situation and how ethanol may or may not be shipped through existing pipelines. The article indicates that a new, ethanol-only pipeline would cost over $1 million per mile. Kinder Morgan is preparing to test a run of 8000 gallons of ethanol through its Florida underground gasoline pipeline. Another company, Teppco Partners, ran 6500 gallons of ethanol in their pipeline last year. The fuel had to be filtered at the receiving end because “it picked up three decades worth of impurities” in the pipeline.

This is an interesting article in more ways than just a cellulosic ethanol plant in Florida (which is big news on its own). It is a huge, multibillion dollar deal by the state to purchase the US Sugar Co. lands. However, what I find more interesting in the article are the small details about Coskata’s technology. Granted, sugarcane baggase is different than normal cellulosic materials, Coskata is claiming that once their demonstration plant in Pennsylvania opens, they’ll be making ethanol for $1 per gallon. That’s a lofty target. They also indicate that by squeezing the sugarcane leaf material, they will produce “extra water for South Florida” instead of being a net consumer.

Food or fuel? It’s the ethanol battle

Ok, I know your thinking that this is just another story about food versus fuel. Well, it is. But, I think this one has value, not only because it is well written, but because it uses a great analogy to describe the current ethanol industry. A couple of folks compare ethanol today to a 1980 IBM computer. He notes that the computers of that time were big and clunky and not nearly as efficient as we wanted them to be. He then concludes “they looked pretty silly compared to what we have now … (but) you gotta start somewhere with this stuff.” I think people need to look forward, plan for the future and realize the more effort we put into biofuels, we can go farther, faster.

Cheap ethanol is making it into gasoline in larger and larger percentages as blenders try to take advantage of cost savings. Any blends above E10, excluding E85, are in violation of the Clean Air Act and subject to $32,500 per day in fines from EPA. Spot tests have shown blends of up to 20% at retail stations. Automotive manufacturers are leery of the problem and some states, like Tennessee, are taking closer looks at blending facilities.

In a decision that has been anticipated for a while, the USDA decided not to allow CRP acres to be withdrawn from the program without penalty. The article gives a clear overview of how the decision was reached. Reasons for it included the new Farm Bill’s reduction in CRP acreage (cap down by almost 7 million acres), current size of corn crop, and a recent court case that cited the USDA for lack of environmental impact statements for changes made to hay and grazing lands. An EIS for CRP lands would be much more complicated.

You will notice that the International News section of today’s email is loaded with articles about Brazil, WTO talks, and ethanol tariffs. This article provides an overview of the entire situation. The EU has given ground, reducing tariffs on certain quantities of Brazillian ethanol (450 million gallons). However, the US has been reluctant to reduce its 54 cents per gallon tariff. Even the EU tariff excemption was met with negativity by the Brazilian sugarcane industry in that it was not enough! The US is the world’s largest producer of ethanol and Brazil is second. The article briefly mentions that Brazil has had issues getting its ethanol seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline. With concerns about industry practices there, the country may find it difficult to find any support in the US for tariff reductions, among environmentalists, agriculturalists, and industrialists alike.

This article is a nice in-depth look at some research underway looking at termite stomachs and the enzymes they contain. These “walking bioreactors” as the researcher calls them contain extremely efficient enzymes that release sugars from the materials these insects eat. These enzymes hold lots of potential for commercial development of efficient cellulosic technologies. We have some research underway here at the University of Tennessee that is also looking at termite enzymes. Dr. Juan Jurat Fuentes is heading that effort through a Sun Grant funded research program.

This article is a review of the book “Gusher of Lies” which focuses on the myths of energy independence. It makes note of several of the author’s key arguments in refuting the ideas of energy independence. The one that caught my attention was how automakers, when calculating mileage for their flexfuel vehicles, “artificially” inflate gas mileage using ethanol. It related to gasoline being considered in absence of ethanol and without the amount of ethanol added into the equation. I don’t take these things at face value and will research this, but this is a line of thought I had not seen before.

This article takes an interesting look at an ARA study relating the amount of glomalin, a sugar-protein, in switchgrass to the potential erodibility of soils. The more glomalin a soil contains, the less likely that soil is to erode. The study found that as plants formed a symbiotic relationship with fungi in the soil, glomalin levels rose. This increase was most pronounced under native warm season grasses like switchgrass. Glomalin also stores carbon and adds to soil fertility. The article also links to the ARS study.

The research featured in this article, work by Dr. Percival Zhang, was conducted at Virginia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Southeastern Sun Grant Center was able to provide funding for Dr. Zhang to travel and conduct research at ORNL. The work has led to processes to convert biomass into ethanol and biohydrogen.
